Muslim estate administration in Singapore
Faraid may name the heirs. It does not give every heir the power to act.
When a family faces bank accounts, an HDB flat and investments, entitlement and legal authority become two different questions.
The certificate arrives. The assets remain out of reach.
A Muslim dies in Singapore. The family obtains an Inheritance Certificate and sees the names of the Faraid beneficiaries and their respective shares.
Then the bank asks for a court grant. HDB requires further documents. Investments and other assets may follow different processes.
The family has answered who may inherit. It has not necessarily answered who may collect, manage and distribute the estate.
A Faraid share is an entitlement. It is not an automatic licence to withdraw money, sell property or speak for the estate.
Who inherits?
Identifies the beneficiaries and their respective shares under Muslim law.
Who may act?
Legally recognises the executor or administrator who may manage the estate.
Not every asset follows the same road
Bank accounts
A bank may require a certified copy of the court grant before releasing estate money.
HDB flat
The route depends on whether the flat was held jointly, solely or as tenants in common.
CPF savings
A valid nomination or the Public Trustee process may apply. CPF savings do not simply pass through a Will.
Insurance and investments
Nominations, ownership records and the type of investment can change the legal route.

In Mohamed Noorul Ameen v Mohamed Ibrahim, the father died in 2000 and the family home remained in his sole name. Almost four years later, the family authorised one son, Dawood, to handle the estate administration.

Map the estate
Identify assets, debts, ownership records and nominations.
Confirm the beneficiaries
Obtain the Inheritance Certificate for the Muslim estate.
Appoint the administrator
Determine priority and obtain any required renunciations.
Obtain and use the grant
File the documents, receive the grant and approach the relevant institutions.
When a legal review becomes useful
Several assets can mean several legal questions
- An HDB flat together with bank accounts and investments
- Uncertainty over who has priority to apply
- Renunciation documents that are not fully understood
- A business, overseas asset or possible family dispute
- Different institutions requesting different documents
Do not divide the estate before confirming who may legally hold the keys.
A review should clarify the estate and the correct process. It should not turn every death into an expensive court matter.
