Islam, but Make It Aesthetic
Let’s be real: your feed probably has a mix of Qur’an recitation over lo-fi beats, gym selfies captioned “Alhamdulillah for gains,” and the occasional Arabic quote no one translates (because mystery = more likes).
This is the new frontier of Muslim identity: aesthetic spirituality. And while there’s nothing wrong with curating beauty, there’s a fine line between reminding and performing.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Actions are judged by intentions.”
But when you’re filming your Tahajjud setup with moody lighting and captions, you gotta ask: who’s your intention really for?
Dawah or Drama?
Social media has birthed a new species: the keyboard mufti.
Armed with one semester of YouTube-based fiqh and a Canva account, they’re ready to declare you astray for everything from celebrating Eid twice to owning a cat with eyebrows.
But let’s ask: Would the Sahaba™ act this way online?
Take the example of Abu Bakr RA—known for his gentleness and sincerity. You think he’d be subtweeting Uthman RA for differing on a Sunnah? Or posting “I can’t vibe with Madinah Muslims anymore. Makkah born, Makki raised”?
Dawah, at its core, is about love, patience, and clarity—not ratio-ing someone into submission.
Mindful Posting: The Sunnah We Forgot
The Prophet ﷺ once said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
This hadith should be the terms and conditions of every social platform. But unfortunately, we often skip this sunnah in the heat of online “debates” that are really just ego flexes.
Before you clap back at someone’s Reels theology, pause and ask:
- Is this benefitting anyone?
- Would I say this to someone’s face in the masjid?
- Or am I just farming likes from my echo chamber?
Private Worship, Public Persona
It’s okay to share your spiritual journey—it can be inspiring. But your private moments with Allah should stay… private.
Ali RA said:
“Do not let your religion be something that is visible to the people, but empty in the heart.”
So before you post your Qur’an journaling setup with calligraphy pens and curated coffee mugs, ask:
Would I still be doing this if no one watched?
And if the answer is “maybe not”… it’s time to log out and recharge your iman the analog way.
What Would the Sahaba Actually Do?
They wouldn’t thirst-trap in ihram, that’s for sure.
But more than that, they’d probably:
- Use tech as a tool, not a crutch.
- Avoid calling people out unless there’s real benefit.
- Focus on personal development over public performance.
- Slide into DMs with da’wah, not drama (okay, maybe they wouldn’t “slide” at all).
In other words, they’d be intentional, gentle, and God-conscious—whether on the minbar or in the metaverse.
So, Can Muslims Be Online and Still Be Pious?
Absolutely. But like with everything in Islam, it’s all about the niyyah (intention) and the adab (manners). You can tweet, post, go live, and still be spiritually grounded—if you’re doing it for Allah, not applause.
So next time you pick up your phone, ask yourself:
“Is this a digital deed… or just dopamine?”
Because in the end, every scroll is a choice.
And Jannah doesn’t require WiFi—just sincerity.
