Part 1
Mo found himself amidst the beautiful diversity of Muslim communities, each boasting its own unique colors and flavors. Despite this enchanting tapestry, questions arose about why some Muslims seemed discontent within their own community. Why the differing views? Why the constant attempts to impose one’s perspective on others? Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim!
In his exploration, Mo witnessed various expressions of faith, from differing styles of prayer to interpretations of religious attire. He encountered the influence of Mazhabs, or Islamic jurisprudential schools, which contributed to the subtle differences in practice.
One day, he observed a group of brothers whose adherence to traditional Islamic fashion left him feeling a bit out of place. Yet, he appreciated the richness of their commitment to authenticity. Another encounter with a Salafi friend offered advice on adhering to specific practices, highlighting the diverse interpretations within Islam.
Despite the contradictions and complexities he encountered, Mo recognized a common thread – the love for Allah and the pursuit of spiritual growth. Some emphasized adherence to tradition, while others prioritized a more mystical approach. Mo’s journey led him to seek understanding on his own terms, bridging the gap between different perspectives in his quest for closeness to the Almighty.
With the calmness of the sea came the storm. Mo might have felt a bit overwhelmed after delving into YouTube’s vast sea of Islamic content. Ah, I totally get why Mo was overwhelmed. It’s like going down a rabbit hole with no end in sight! Let me share a couple of examples that might have caught Mo’s attention and left him taken aback by the vigorous arguments between Salafists and Sunnis. Let me share a couple of examples that caught Mo’s attention and left him taken aback by the vigorous arguments between Salafists and Sunnis.
- The Beard Debate: Mo stumbled upon a video where scholars passionately argue that growing a long beard is a Sunnah and a clear sign of adherence to the Prophet’s way. On the other hand, Sunnis presented a counter-argument, emphasizing that while it’s a recommended practice, it’s not a strict requirement, and the length of one’s beard should be a personal choice. This kind of back-and-forth can sometimes get quite intense, with both sides presenting their evidence and interpretations.

Mo’s feelings of confusion are completely understandable, especially when faced with all the different opinions and practices within the Muslim community. The debates over beard length, whether it should be long, short, or fist-sized, and even the nuances of mustache trimming can indeed make one’s head spin.
Mo needs to know that he’s not alone in feeling this way. Many Muslims have grappled with similar questions about how to best adhere to the Quran and Sunnah while navigating the complexities of contemporary life.
When it comes to matters like these, it’s essential to remember that the most critical aspect of one’s faith is the sincerity of the heart. Islam is not about the length of one’s beard or the precise measurements of facial hair; it’s about the intentions behind our actions and the quality of our character. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of a sincere and good heart over external appearances.
- Women’s Dress Code: Another hot topic he fumbled upon in the Salafi vs. Sunni debate was the hijab and modest clothing for Muslim women. Salafists might advocate for the niqab (face veil) as a more conservative approach, citing hadiths and scholarly opinions. In contrast, Sunnis might argue that a simple headscarf is sufficient, and the choice of modest clothing should be based on personal conviction and local customs. This debate often raises passionate voices and differing interpretations of Islamic sources. Please refer to my previous blogs on this matter.
- Scholarly Differences: Mo encountered videos where Salafists and Sunnis critique each other’s scholars and their teachings. This can sometimes turn into a full-blown intellectual battle with each side defending its scholars and their interpretations. Four Madhabs and Why Do They Differ? – Dr Zakir Naik
The passion in these debates often arises from genuine devotion to Islam and a sincere desire to follow the right path. However, it’s essential to remember that Islamic scholarship is vast and complex, and differences in interpretation have existed throughout history. What may seem like a mismatch on YouTube is often a reflection of the rich diversity within the Muslim community.
For Mo, it’s crucial to approach these discussions with an open mind, seeking knowledge and understanding from various sources. He can take what resonates with his heart and aligns with his beliefs while respecting the diversity of opinions within Islam. After all, the beauty of our faith lies in its ability to accommodate a wide range of perspectives, all striving to live by the Quran and Sunnah.
In the grand scheme of things, as we ponder upon Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim – the Most Merciful and Compassionate – we realize that these differences, no matter how amusing or perplexing, pale in comparison to the magnitude of Allah’s mercy. His divine patience and understanding are boundless, and in His infinite wisdom, He allows these variations in our path to Him.
So, next time you find yourself chuckling at the quirks of the Muslim community, remember that Allah’s anger is reserved for shirk – the association of partners with Him. Our colorful array of beliefs and practices, while amusing at times, ultimately falls within the vast canvas of His mercy. Let’s continue this journey together, appreciating the unique tapestry of our community and striving to embody the essence of Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim in all that we do. Building an intimate relationship with Allah, Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim is a journey of the heart where we find boundless compassion and unwavering love. In this relationship, we seek solace and strength, express gratitude, and strive for better while recognizing that Allah’s mercy is unconditional. It is a source of eternal love and hope, inviting us to draw closer to the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
