Part 4 of the Unfiltered Series: What Islam Says About the West’s Most Controversial Women’s Issues

“Having It All”—Or Just Doing It All?

Modern feminism often sells a dazzling dream: the woman who’s got the job, the man, the body, the baby—and a side hustle too. She’s leaning in at meetings, hitting the gym by 6 a.m., and serving Pinterest-worthy school lunches. But behind this glamorous multitasking icon is a haunting question: “Why am I so exhausted?”

The Western model of “having it all” has increasingly come to mean “doing it all”, with little support, increasing burnout, and eroding spiritual depth.

The Islamic Perspective: Balance, Not Burnout

Islam doesn’t demand that women stay barefoot in the kitchen—nor does it push them to shatter glass ceilings at the cost of their mental, emotional, or spiritual health.

In fact, Islam acknowledges:

  • Women’s right to education and work
  • The value of motherhood and family care
  • The right to financial independence
  • The importance of personal well-being

But what’s revolutionary is that Islam doesn’t expect women to do all of these at once.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Your body has a right over you…” (Bukhari)
And likewise, your soul, your family, your Creator.

This balance is called ‘adl (justice), not just in society—but within the self.

Real Talk: What “Having It All” Really Means

In Islam, a woman’s worth isn’t determined by titles, trends, or trophies. It’s measured by intention, taqwa (God-consciousness), and how she fulfills her role—whatever role she chooses—with ihsān (excellence).

She’s not less if she stays home.
She’s not better because she earns six figures.
She’s only successful if she strives for balance, sincerity, and obedience to Allah in whatever capacity she operates.

Modern Feminism vs. Islamic Empowerment

Feminist IdealIslamic Ideal
Be everything, all the timeBe excellent in your chosen path
Chase freedom and identity externallyAnchor worth in faith and purpose
Burnout is a badge of honorBalance is a divine right and duty
Career defines successSuccess = Taqwa + Contribution

Islamic empowerment isn’t a downgrade—it’s a course correction. It says:

“You’re already enough if you are sincere, dignified, and just. You don’t need to prove your power by stretching yourself thin.”

An Empowering Reminder

The wives of the Prophet ﷺ—Khadijah (RA), a successful businesswoman, and Fatimah (RA), a devoted mother—show us you don’t have to pick sides. But you do need to prioritize what matters most in each season of your life.

Having it all? Maybe.
Doing it all? Definitely not the Islamic way.

Conclusion: Redefining “All”

“Having it all” is not about being a superhero.
It’s about living a life pleasing to Allah, honoring your duties to yourself, your family, and your Creator—without losing your soul to someone else’s idea of success.

Because in the end, it’s not about how much you have.
It’s about what you carried to the Hereafter.
